Vietnam and France have strengthened their collaboration in space technology through the VNREDSat-1 satellite program, setting the stage for future advancements in next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and domestic capabilities. VNREDSat-1, Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite, was launched on May 7, 2013, and transitioned to operational status by September of that year. Remarkably, the satellite has surpassed its original five-year lifespan, remaining functional into 2026, marking its 14th year in service.
Through this program, Vietnam has not only operated satellites but also cultivated substantial expertise in the field. From 2011 to 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, mastering system design and satellite operations. This training empowered them to independently address technical issues, shifting from reliance on transferred procedures to creating their own solutions. Additionally, Vietnam established an integrated remote-sensing system that encompasses imaging requests, satellite control, and data management. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has produced nearly 30,000 satellite images, supporting environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and security activities.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized that the program has laid a critical technical and human-resource foundation for future satellite endeavors. However, he noted that achieving technological self-reliance requires further advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, software, integration, and ground systems. This ambition aligns with the new phase of cooperation initiated during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025.
During Macron’s visit, a declaration of intent for long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation was signed by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies. The collaboration aims to explore a next-generation Earth observation system and consider technological options for a proposed VNREDSat-2. This future partnership is expected to enhance Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, and data applications, with a focus on control software, image processing, artificial intelligence, and sensor development.
The overarching goal of this collaboration is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to engaging in co-development and mastering technology. This would empower Vietnamese scientists and engineers to design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually develop future generations of satellite technology independently, marking a significant step toward greater technological autonomy.
