Vietnam has underscored its significant role in enhancing the partnership between ASEAN and Russia, following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung highlighted Vietnam’s pivotal contributions to the success of the summit, which aimed to bolster ASEAN’s centrality and advance the strategic partnership with Russia. The Vietnamese delegation, led by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, focused on the importance of dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international law.
During the summit, Vietnam proposed expanding cooperation in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These proposals were integral to the new frameworks adopted at the summit, designed to enhance ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030. Energy was identified as a key pillar of this partnership, reflecting the growing importance of collaboration in this area. Additionally, Vietnam announced its plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, showcasing its commitment to nurturing future regional cooperation.
In a significant development on the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During their discussions, both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The talks centered on expanding cooperation in various sectors, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
The outcomes of the summit are expected to enhance ASEAN–Russia relations, contributing to regional stability and opening new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across Eurasia. Vietnam’s active participation and initiatives at the summit demonstrate its dedication to fostering deeper ties within ASEAN and with Russia, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing regional and global challenges.
