Vietnam is increasingly positioning itself as a key player in fostering the relationship between ASEAN and Russia, following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. According to Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung, Vietnam played a pivotal role in the summit’s success by promoting ASEAN’s central role and bolstering efforts to enhance the bloc’s strategic partnership with Russia.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the Vietnamese delegation underscored the importance of dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international law. They advocated for expanded collaboration in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. The summit resulted in the adoption of new frameworks intended to reinforce ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a key pillar of this partnership.
In a demonstration of its commitment to future regional cooperation, Vietnam announced that it will host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This reflects Vietnam’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of regional leaders and diplomats.
On the margins of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, focusing on expanding cooperation across various fields, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam expressed that the outcomes of the summit would contribute to strengthening ASEAN–Russia relations, enhancing regional stability, and creating new economic growth and cooperation opportunities across Eurasia. The summit’s achievements highlight Vietnam’s proactive role in advancing ASEAN’s strategic objectives and fostering deeper ties with Russia.
