During a mid-year meeting held in Da Nang, officials from the two nations evaluated the progress achieved in the initial eight months of 2026 and set forth priorities for the remaining months of the year. This gathering underscored the commitment of both countries to strengthen their collaborative efforts.
The economic partnership between Vietnam and Laos continues to grow, with Vietnamese enterprises initiating 20 new investment projects in Laos, valued at $638.3 million in the first seven months of 2026. Laos remains a pivotal destination for Vietnamese investment abroad, hosting approximately 300 projects backed by Vietnam, collectively worth over $7 billion. Bilateral trade also witnessed significant activity, reaching nearly $1.3 billion in the first half of the year, marking an upward trajectory in economic ties.
In addition to trade and investment, the two countries are making headway in energy, transport, construction, and infrastructure connectivity. These sectors are crucial for fostering a more integrated regional economy. Collaborative efforts extend into education and human resource development, where Vietnam is offering 1,300 scholarships for Lao students in 2026. Furthermore, Vietnam has pledged $43 million in aid to Laos as part of a broader assistance program spanning from 2026 to 2030, demonstrating a long-term commitment to supporting its neighbor.
Both governments have agreed to enhance coordination on major projects and address investment challenges, aiming to fortify economic links across the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region. This cooperative framework is set to bolster regional development and ensure mutual benefits for all parties involved. The meeting in Da Nang highlighted the shared vision of Vietnam and Laos to deepen their strategic partnership and explore new avenues of collaboration.
