In a significant diplomatic move, Anutin Charnvirakul and Emmanuel Macron have decided to upgrade the relationship between Thailand and France to a strategic partnership. This agreement emerged from official discussions in Paris, where the two leaders explored avenues for broadening cooperation in several key sectors, including trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology. The talks were held at the Élysée Palace and also touched on regional dynamics involving Cambodia and Myanmar.
The two nations have committed to enhancing collaboration in various industries, such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France has also reiterated its support for wrapping up the negotiations on the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement by the end of this year. These trade talks, which initially began in 2013, were put on hold in 2014 and only resumed in 2023. Thai officials are optimistic that this agreement will unlock substantial economic opportunities for both countries.
Furthermore, Thailand and France have agreed to bolster their defense and cybersecurity cooperation, focusing on tackling issues like cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. On the regional front, Thailand reaffirmed its dedication to resolving border disputes with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law frameworks.
The governments have also announced intentions to implement the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership for 2026-2028, which will lay the groundwork for a formal strategic partnership. During his visit, Anutin engaged with top executives from major French firms, including Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group, to encourage increased investment in Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech and future industries.
French companies have shown confidence in Thailand’s investment climate, with Airbus confirming its plans to expand aviation and engineering operations within the country. This development underscores the mutual benefits anticipated from the deepening of Thailand-France relations, paving the way for enhanced economic and strategic ties between the two nations.
