Việt Nam and Japan have committed to enhancing their defence cooperation in several strategic areas, encompassing military training, cybersecurity, and the development of the defence industry. The two nations also plan to collaborate on United Nations peacekeeping operations and post-war recovery initiatives. This agreement was reached during a meeting in Hà Nội between Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces.
In the discussions, General Phan Văn Giang underscored Việt Nam’s dedication to improving consultation and dialogue mechanisms, broadening cooperation among different military branches, and advancing collaboration in defence technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. He emphasized that defence relations have become a crucial element of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Việt Nam and Japan.
Further highlighting the cooperation, the Vietnamese minister acknowledged Japan’s significant support in areas such as personnel training, defence industry development, technology transfer, and post-war recovery projects. He also advocated for increased scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese defence personnel, particularly in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.
Japan stands as one of Việt Nam’s principal economic and strategic partners, with their collaboration extending across trade, investment, development assistance, and labour exchanges. The scope of defence cooperation has notably widened, reinforced by consistent policy dialogues and military consultations between the two countries.
General Uchikura reiterated Japan’s commitment to bolstering defence ties with Việt Nam, expressing support for expanding cooperation in high-level exchanges, military education, cybersecurity, and healthcare services within the armed forces. Both nations agreed to maintain close coordination to further enhance mutual trust, regional stability, and long-term strategic cooperation.
