Vietnam and Switzerland are set to enhance their Comprehensive Partnership with a focus on trade, technology, and sustainable development. This initiative follows Swiss President Guy Parmelin’s official visit to Vietnam, marking 55 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
A significant development from the visit is the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Switzerland is a member. This agreement is expected to enhance market access and foster business growth, creating opportunities for increased trade and investment upon its implementation.
The leaders of both nations underscored the importance of strengthening political dialogue, economic ties, and collaboration through international institutions. They aim to boost bilateral trade, which surpassed $1 billion in 2025, and attract more Swiss investment in Vietnam, particularly in green finance, digital technology, and sustainable tourism.
Opportunities for joint research and technology transfer were also discussed, with a focus on biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy. Collaboration between government institutions, universities, and businesses is anticipated to drive innovation and the commercial application of research.
Vietnam expressed interest in bolstering educational partnerships, leveraging Switzerland’s expertise in education and scientific research to facilitate exchanges among experts, researchers, and students.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable development, free trade, and a rules-based international order, expressing confidence that their enhanced partnership would support economic growth and contribute to regional and global stability.
