Vietnam has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its strategic relationship with Laos, emphasizing the need for enhanced economic collaboration and infrastructure connectivity. During a meeting in Hanoi on Wednesday, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Vilay Lakhamfong, a senior official of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, discussed translating high-level commitments into practical projects that benefit both nations.
The meeting underscored Vietnam’s support for Laos’ national development efforts, with Hưng highlighting opportunities to expand cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, defense, security, education, science, technology, and tourism. He emphasized the importance of accelerating major infrastructure projects like the Hanoi–Vientiane expressway and the Vientiane–Vung Ang railway, as well as energy connectivity initiatives.
Both countries expressed their determination to implement the Vietnam–Laos Cooperation Strategy for 2021–2030 and the bilateral governmental cooperation agreement for 2026–2030. They also stressed the significance of regular high-level exchanges and closer coordination between ministries, local authorities, and businesses.
As the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam–Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation approaches in 2027, both sides are preparing for the Vietnam–Laos Year of Friendship and Strategic Cohesion. These activities aim to strengthen historic ties, particularly among younger generations.
Lakhamfong expressed gratitude for Vietnam’s ongoing support and reaffirmed Laos’ commitment to preserving the bilateral relationship. He highlighted the importance of continued coordination on regional security, stability, and economic development.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing confidence that enhanced cooperation would bolster political trust, advance shared development goals, and contribute to regional peace and stability.
