In a bid to fortify their longstanding alliance, Vietnam and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors. This was highlighted during a meeting between Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Lao National Assembly President Sonexay Siphandone in Vientiane on October 8. The meeting, marking Hưng’s first official visit to Laos as prime minister, underscored the strategic importance of their partnership amid shifting regional and international dynamics.
Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress in political relations, defense, security, foreign affairs, trade, and investment. They also emphasized the significance of collaboration in education, transport, energy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. Acknowledging the deep historical ties between the two nations, they committed to implementing existing agreements and turning diplomatic understandings into tangible outcomes.
Prime Minister Hưng urged the Lao National Assembly to support initiatives that would enhance the business climate and remove regulatory barriers, thereby fostering investment opportunities for Vietnamese and Lao enterprises. Both sides agreed on the need for improved conditions for businesses operating in each other’s markets, focusing on key economic cooperation projects.
The leaders also highlighted the importance of inter-parliamentary cooperation, which includes delegation exchanges, sharing legislative experiences, and tighter coordination at regional and international parliamentary forums. Recognizing the role of people-to-people exchanges, especially among the youth, they agreed to promote awareness of their shared history and strengthen public understanding of their enduring friendship.
Preparations for the Vietnam–Laos and Laos–Vietnam Year of Solidarity, Friendship, and Cohesion in 2027 were discussed, with both countries planning to celebrate the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.
Ultimately, both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining strong bilateral ties and coordinating on development priorities that will deliver concrete benefits to their citizens. This commitment reflects a broader strategy to adapt to changing geopolitical conditions while preserving the unique and strategic relationship between Vietnam and Laos.
