The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has been pivotal in strengthening the collaboration between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. This partnership is anticipated to advance further, focusing on next-generation satellites, technology transfer, training, and enhancing Vietnam’s domestic capabilities. Officially launched on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 became Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite and was transferred for operation in September of that year. Remarkably, despite an initial life expectancy of five years, the satellite continues to function in 2026, marking its 14th year in service.
A key outcome of the VNREDSat-1 initiative was the development of Vietnam’s expertise beyond mere satellite operations. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operations, and problem-solving. This training empowered them to independently manage technical issues, transitioning from merely following transferred procedures to crafting their own solutions. Vietnam further established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that encompasses imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, the satellite has provided nearly 30,000 images for various applications, including environmental and natural resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security-related activities.
The President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Trần Hồng Thái, highlighted the program’s significant contribution to establishing a technical and human-resource base for future satellite projects. However, he emphasized that achieving greater technological self-reliance would necessitate advancements in areas such as satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
A significant new phase of cooperation commenced during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent for long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. The partners are investigating a next-generation Earth observation system and considering technological options for a proposed VNREDSat-2. Future collaboration is expected to prioritize Vietnamese participation in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. Potential opportunities for Vietnam lie in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads.
The overarching goal is to transition from simply purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering the technology. This shift would allow Vietnamese scientists and engineers to progressively design, operate, troubleshoot, and ultimately develop future satellite technologies independently.
