Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing met in Hà Nội on September 5 to discuss strengthening their countries’ bilateral relations. During their meeting, they agreed to boost cooperation across various sectors, underscoring the importance of enhancing their partnership. Prime Minister Hưng warmly welcomed President Min Aung Hlaing on his first official visit to Vietnam in his new capacity, expressing Vietnam’s ongoing support for Myanmar’s initiatives aimed at achieving stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic progress.
President Min Aung Hlaing commended Vietnam for its socio-economic successes and increasing influence on the regional and international stages. He showed interest in learning from Vietnam’s development journey and reiterated Myanmar’s dedication to preserving its longstanding friendship and extensive cooperation with Vietnam. The leaders acknowledged recent positive developments in their bilateral relationship and agreed on the necessity of boosting high-level exchanges and building political trust. They emphasized the need to revive key cooperation mechanisms focused on trade, security, and defense.
Defense and security are set to become fundamental elements of this strengthened partnership. The nations plan to collaborate more closely in countering cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Additionally, they aim to enhance military training, facilitate exchanges among young officers, and address non-traditional security challenges together. Economic collaboration was another focal point of their discussions. Both parties expressed interest in exploring avenues to boost trade and update existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar encouraged Vietnamese investment in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure.
The discussions also covered improving infrastructure and air connectivity, including the restoration of direct flights and the development of joint tourism initiatives covering spiritual and medical tourism. On regional matters, Vietnam pledged to continue collaborating with ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both leaders supported peaceful resolutions to disputes in accordance with international law. Prime Minister Hưng extended an invitation to President Min Aung Hlaing to attend the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội, scheduled for November 2026. In return, President Min Aung Hlaing invited Prime Minister Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time.
