Tô Lâm, serving as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President, has been honored with the 2026 Lev N. Tolstoy International Peace Prize. This accolade recognizes his significant contributions towards fostering peace and enhancing international cooperation. The international jury, in a unanimous decision, selected Tô Lâm for his efforts in promoting dialogue and strengthening peaceful cooperation among nations.
Valery Gergiev, the jury chairman and General Director of the Bolshoi Theatre as well as the Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, announced the decision. He lauded Vietnam’s impressive economic growth, which has been achieved while maintaining its cultural heritage amidst global integration. The jury praised Tô Lâm not only for his role in Vietnam’s development but also for his commitment to supporting global justice, advocating for respect for international law, and fostering dialogue and peaceful cooperation in global affairs.
Notable members of the jury included Vladimir Tolstoy, Director General of the State Museum of L.N. Tolstoy and a descendant of the famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, French public figure Pierre de Gaulle, and South African parliamentarian Lindiwe Sisulu. They underscored the significance of preserving the humanitarian values championed by Tolstoy himself. Vietnam’s transformation from a war-torn nation to one of the fastest-growing economies in the Asia-Pacific region was highlighted as an inspiring example for countries aspiring to peace and sustainable development.
The Lev N. Tolstoy International Peace Prize, which is being awarded for the third time, honors individuals who have made substantial contributions to peace and international understanding. An international council composed of distinguished political, cultural, and public figures from nations including Argentina, Belarus, China, France, India, Japan, Russia, and South Africa selects the laureate. This prestigious award acknowledges the enduring impact of those who strive for and achieve significant advancements in global peace efforts.
