The relationship between Việt Nam and Australia’s Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is poised for enhancement following discussions between Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Hùng Tâm and ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. The talks focused on strengthening ties between Hà Nội, Ho Chi Minh City, and Canberra, with both parties expressing a commitment to deepen cooperation in various sectors.
Ambassador Tâm expressed optimism about Barr’s impending visit to Hà Nội and Ho Chi Minh City, anticipating it would unlock new avenues for collaboration. He underscored the potential for joint ventures in renewable energy, innovation, education, tourism, and smart urban development, reflecting a shared interest in these progressive fields.
In a bid to solidify long-term collaboration, the ambassador proposed establishing a formal friendship and cooperation agreement between Hà Nội and the ACT. This initiative aims to foster enduring partnerships across multiple sectors, aligning with the strategic interests of both regions.
Chief Minister Barr, preparing for his inaugural visit to Việt Nam, acknowledged the country’s role as a priority economic partner for the ACT under its international engagement strategy. He welcomed the suggestion of forming a sister-city relationship with Hà Nội, viewing it as a platform to collaborate on crucial initiatives like green transition, electric transport, and renewable energy projects to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Furthermore, Barr conveyed his readiness to engage in public diplomacy activities during the future visits of senior Vietnamese leaders to Australia, highlighting the ACT’s commitment to fostering a robust bilateral relationship.
