The conflict in Ukraine has reached a critical crossroads, with US President Donald Trump demanding tangible progress within two weeks and Russian President Vladimir Putin voicing hope for a diplomatic breakthrough with the Trump administration. Trump has threatened “massive” economic consequences for Russia if peace efforts remain stalled.
Speaking to reporters, Trump outlined his stark choice: impose heavy sanctions and tariffs, or “do nothing” and let the conflict run its course. The decision, he said, will be made after observing the actions of Russia and Ukraine over the next fortnight. His focus is on whether a meeting between President Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky will take place.
In Russia, Putin struck a conciliatory tone regarding the US leader. Visiting the birthplace of the Soviet atomic bomb in Sarov, he said that despite relations being at a low point, the Trump presidency represented a “light at the end of the tunnel.” This suggests Moscow sees Trump as a leader with whom it can potentially do business.
Putin’s remarks were not entirely conciliatory, however. He strongly asserted the principle of Russian sovereignty, claiming it was essential for the nation’s survival in a way that it is not for Western Europe. This defiant undertone serves as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead, even if a path for negotiation is opening up.
