Jair Bolsonaro told a judge that a medication-induced mental episode drove him to damage his court-mandated ankle monitor, which he believed was bugged at the time.
His explanation followed his arrest early Saturday, after security officials noticed signs the tracking device had been tampered with. Authorities suspected he intended to escape to a foreign embassy.
Bolsonaro has been awaiting imprisonment on a 27-year sentence after being convicted for orchestrating a failed coup. As his transfer to prison drew near, officials intensified surveillance.
During Sunday’s hearing, Bolsonaro said a combination of medications had triggered hallucinations and paranoia. Acting under this delusion, he used a hand tool to interfere with the device.
Many political analysts questioned the credibility of the story, referencing earlier footage where he offered a different explanation. International responses were notably restrained as Brazil moved forward with legal proceedings.
