The UK’s ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, has launched a defense of Donald Trump’s “America First” foreign policy, arguing that it “does not actually mean America Alone.” In a speech aimed at building bridges with the Trump administration, Mandelson sought to rebrand the controversial doctrine as one of leveraged engagement rather than isolationism.
Mandelson contended that Trump uses America’s significant influence to “put the right people in the room and hammer out compromises.” He pointed to the president’s interventions in multiple global conflicts over the past seven months as proof that he is not indifferent to the world, but rather engages with it on terms he believes are more favorable to the US.
This reinterpretation of Trump’s worldview was the cornerstone of Mandelson’s pitch for a new US-UK alliance focused on technology. He argued that to compete effectively with China in areas like AI and quantum computing, a strong partnership with a globally engaged, Trump-led America is essential. He dismissed the idea of distancing the UK from the US as “lazy thinking.”
The speech also highlighted Trump’s disruptive impact on the “international old guard,” which Mandelson described as a necessary “wake-up call.” He asserted that the president is right to challenge a status quo where America’s allies often allowed the US to do “most of the heavy lifting” in global security matters.
