After a surprisingly strong year fueled by original hits, Hollywood is holding its breath for an impending blockbuster drought. While Zack Cregger’s Weapons celebrated a massive $148.8 million global haul, the film industry is now staring down a calendar with very few major releases until late October, posing a challenge for theater owners.
The success of Weapons wasn’t an anomaly in 2025. It was part of a rewarding trend where fresh ideas triumphed. Jurassic World Rebirth became a monster hit with $828 million, and even smaller original horror films found large audiences. This proves that moviegoers are eager to invest their time and money in new, compelling stories.
This vibrant period is set to give way to a quieter time at the multiplex. The late summer and early fall schedules are thin on tentpole releases. Instead, a steady stream of smaller films, including The Long Walk and Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, will be tasked with keeping cinemas busy. The fifth Conjuring film is seen as a bright spot but isn’t expected to carry the entire market.
The real relief for theaters is scheduled for October and November. A powerful lineup including Tron: Ares, Mortal Kombat II, and Zootopia 2 is expected to bring audiences back in massive numbers. In the meantime, the improved financial health of theater chains post-pandemic is their biggest asset in navigating the lean weeks ahead.
